The Presidental Monsters Package Artwork leaked

Heroes in Action toys has shared some striking images of the packaging art for their upcoming tongue in cheek "The Presidential Monsters" series of action figures. The Presidents will also be available in regular editions but these striking images

HIA plans to release regular editions of Dutch, Bubba and Barry as well for those not so horror inclined.

The Presidential Monsters should be hitting stores in the last quarter of 2011. Stay tuned to the Megomuseum for more developements.

Apes invade Japan! Taylor needs your help!

Many foreign distributors put their own mark on the Mego Planet of the Apes line but one of the most interesting was by Japanese distributor Bullmark who packaged the apes in pretty window boxes with each figure in an action pose. They also included this ultra cool catalog which thanks to Scott from Megocipsa.com we have a better look at.

As an added bonus, Mego guru John Bonavita has provided us with translations to a few of the panels which give offer a unique take on the Apes saga.

EMCE TOYS BRINGS ZOMBIES TO TOY FAIR!

They retrofied the DC Comics superheroes, transported the crew of the Enterprise back from the 1970s, but today EMCE Toys unearthed several lines of toys and collectibles of nothing but zombies, zombies, ZOMBIES!

Booth 4948 at the New York Toy Fair was Zombie Survival Headquarters as the EMCE team unleashed several different types of toys, in the familiar 8″ Mego format that they relaunched half a decade ago as well as several other surprising formats.

Leading the line was the first packaged action figure customizing kit ever, the “Make Your Own Zombie” kit. Featuring three Mego base bodies, five heads in varying states of decay, plus interchangeable arms, legs, hands and feet, as well as two sets of clothing and a DVD with painting and assembly techniques, it was the hit of the booth.

Right behind that was the new line of hyper-detailed 1/9 figures, with detail and accessories rivaling 1/6 figures, based on Fourth Castle’s own intellectual property, War of the Dead. The line of four include a “Commando” with ultra-detailed SWAT uniform and weapons, a “Cadaver Disposal Technician” with HAZMAT suit, gas mask and complex acid spraying apparatus, a female “Researcher Zombie” with rooted hair, decayed face and a terrible scalp wound, and a “Construction Worker” with weathered and gory clothing, construction boots, safety vest and toolbelt.

The last entries in the Mego-format that EMCE rebirthed are the last two figures in the Night of the Living Dead series EMCE launched several years ago. ”Barbra” and “Zombie Karen” have finally arrived to complete the line.
In addition, EMCE premiered several other zombie-related toys targeting traditional mass retailers: a “Zombies Vs. Zombie Hunters” amy men set, glow-in-the-dark “Zombie Containment Units”, and several “Zombie Hunter” toy gun sets.

The flyer below (see first post) was handed out to buyers all over Toy Show by EMCE’s team of zombies and ZERO Commandos, to the amusement (and disgust) of attendees.

Bif Bang Pow Announces Doctor Who Action Figures and products

The news was broken today at the Toyfare blog that Bif Bang Pow! had secured the rights to the classic BBC series "Doctor Who" and would be bringing forth a series of Mego style action figures in 2011. An official press release is slated for later and we probably won't see photos until Toy fair but the mind reels as to the possibilities now present.

For every mego fan who has stared longingly at the Denys Fisher Doctor Who figures wondered why they weren't 8 inch figures, this is for you. Below is the original toyfare article:

TOYFARE EXCLUSIVE: “Doctor Who” will finally be getting 8-inch cloth costumed figures, thanks to the retro wizards at Bif Bang Pow! (makers of similar figures for “Venture Bros.,” “Twilight Zone” and more).

It might be a shock, but despite being an icon of countless ’70s childhoods, “Doctor Who” never got a Mego figure. Oh sure, a line was developed by Mego and released in the U.K. by Denys Fisher, but those figures were in a 10-inch scale, and not compatible with the 8-inch Mego figures from Marvel, DC, Star Trek and more. And modern figures from Character Options are 5 inches and plastic.

Now a great injustice is about to be righted. Bif Bang Pow!, makers of Mego-esque retro figures for properties like “The Venture Bros.” and “Twilight Zone” will be releasing a range of products featuring classic and modern “Doctor Who”—including 8-inch retro cloth-costumed figures!

“When I first saw the show, I wondered, ‘Where are the toys?’” says Jason Lenzi CEO of BBP!. “[As a child] I went to England and figured the toys would be everywhere, but there was nothing. So it’s a thrill to be working on these toys.”

Although BBP!’s license includes modern and classic versions of the show (as well as ancillary items like bobbleheads, tins, glassware and journals), first out of the gate will be the greatest Doctor of the ’70s, and the first exposure most Americans born before 1995 had to the series: Fourth Doctor Tom Baker. Prototypes for Baker and three other figures, all drawn from the Baker era of the show, will premiere at next month’s International Toy Fair in New York, with a planned launch for sale at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con in July (along with one or two SDCC-exclusive variants).

Depending on reaction from retailers and fans, subsequent series might draw on the current eleventh incarnation of the Doctor, starring Matt Smith, as well as his companions and enemies. Either way, according to Lenzi, there are plans to make all of the Doctors, eventually.

Now if only BBP! could figure out how to time-travel back to the ’70s, they’d make a lot of kids back then happy.

Any child of the 1970s likely spent some time drooling over a Heroes World ad, if you are a Mego collector, you probably still do. In those pre internet days, those beautifully drawn pages were the only evidence that certain toy lines existed. Nothing spread the word about Super Hero merchandise like a Heroes World Catalog. We here at the Mego Museum wanted to pay a little tribute to this wonderful operation.

The 2010 Mego Museum "Kubby" Awards!

Mego fans, 2010 was truly "our year". Why, if you think back a few years and any idea of having an awards presentation would have resulted in most of them going to a dead company. it's astounding that we now have a variety of products and licenses in which to choose the very best.

We are pleased to present the 2010 Kubby awards, named after the late Neal Kublan former Mego VP who was always ready to share his wealth of knowledge with us fans. These awards were chosen by members of the Mego Museum forums and give credit where it's due despite it being a tough year to pick favourites.

Favourite ReMego line of 2010?

Sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same. During Mego's original tenure the Superheroes ruled and with a whopping 47% of the vote, the Retro Action Heroes by Mattel are the clear winners. The runner up on this would be the amazing EMCE/Diamond Select Universal Monsters with 16%.

Best Science Fiction line of 2010.

The fans have spoken and with half a percentage point between the two Bif Bang Pow's amazing series of Twilight Zone figures narrowly defeated the golaith that is EMCE Star Trek. These black and white beauties are not be missed. Rounding out the third spot is BBP's line of Venture Brothers figures.

Best Superhero Line of 2010

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone the DC comics superheroes are a powerhouse, and the Retro Action Heroes by Mattel recieved 69% of the vote, at 25% Cast A Ways wonderful Captain Action line is the runner up.

Best Horror Line of 2010

Friend, Good! Hands down this award goes to the brillaint EMCE Universal Monsters who snapped up 80% of the vote, at 16% the very nice Spectre Toys Dark Shadows line was a distant second. That was a hard choice for me.

Best Likeness of 2010

Barnabus Collins from Spectre Toys Dark Shadows line was the winner with 26% of the vote, followed closely by the Twilight Zone Kanamit with 21%. Tied for third were the Frankenstein and Wolfman each with 17.5% respectively. A tight race!

Best Accessories of 2010

A clean sweep for Cast-A-Way who recieved 33% of the vote for Captain Action in second with 20% was Cast A Way's the Phantom. What can we say, the boys give their figures a lot of stuff!

BEST BODY 2010

Each with 32% of the vote, Zica and Castaway tie for first leaving EMCE at a very close second with 30%. A photo finish for these three.

BEST PACKAGING 2010

Tied at exactly 21.4% each are CastAway's Captain Action and the EMCE Universal Monsters. A close second at 20% is EMCE's iconic Star Trek Packaging.

Hero Figure You Most Look Forward to in 2011

With 22% of the vote you chose the MegoMuseum's Super Collector, thank you, your cheques are in the mail. Coming in second is Mattel's The Flash with 17% (which some lucky folks got before 2011) and at 16% Zica's Buck Rogers.

Villain Figure You Most Look Forward to in 2011

With 21.4% of the vote the people want their Salt Vampire and they want it now, at 15.5% Tiger Man came in second and Dracula came in third with 14%. You people like your vampires and outer space baddies but an outer space vampire is the best it seems.

With 27% of the vote, the people have said they want more Superheroes in 2011 and Retro Action is number one. The close second with 21% is Zica's Buck Rogers.

With a whopping 52% of the vote, the playset goes to EMCE. This shouldn't come as a shock to anybody really.

A tale of three Ralphs

Thanks to good our friends at Heroes West Coast, we have what is generally referred to as an embarrassment of riches. Not one but three different stage Ralph Hinkley action figures, two early prototypes and a finished, carded production figure.

I don't know about you but I'd have gone nuts if I saw this in a store as a kid....

Another terrific discovery this year provided by our friends at Heroes West Coast, this is a carded Bill Maxwell sales sample recently purchased from a former department store toy buyer. The sample gives great indication as to what the finished product would have looked like.

Our friends at BifBangPow! noticed a couple of missing figures in our Remego Galleries and generously offered some up photos for updates. Our Twilight Zone Gallery now has a page for the Venusian from "Will the Real Martian Please Stand up?"

For years, many Mego Museum members have talked of the "Clearance Star Trek" set which included usually Kirk and Spock figures shrunk wrapped into a Bridge Playset, the playset was normally missing the transporter unit meaning it was a factory leftover of some sort.

Well, finally we have some print evidence of this item, taken from this December 1980 newspaper ad. At $5.00 this was a steal of a deal.

Hopefully one of these sets surfaces someday.

The umpteenth showing of "The Wizard of Oz," but this time the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Wicked Witch were in the audience as well as on the screen.

"Ding-dong the witch is dead," sang 71-year-old Ray Bolger in harmony to the music as he sat watching himself cavorting as the Scarecrow through the 1938 classic. The Wicked Witch,' Margaret Hamilton, and the Tin Man, Jack Haley, along with Bolger and "Wizard of Oz" producer Mcrvyn Le Roy turned out "Monday in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria to wnlch clips of the movie that has been fascinating youngsters for 40 years.

"You never get tired of this picture," Bolger said, singing along and bursting into laughter repeatedly as he watched the movie in preparation for the evening show. "There will never be four personalities like that at one time," declared LcRoy, looking at the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the late Judy Garland as Dorothy and Bert Lahr as the Lion romping together. "Who the hell else can play a lion?" asked Haley out loud. "Only Bert Lahr," he answered himself.

Each star has a different theory for the "Wizard of Oz" popularity. "It has the simplest philosophy of all," says Bolger. "There is no place like home. When Dorothy landed In the Land of Oz, with flowers 10 feettall, she wasn't happy, she realized she had to go home to Auntie."

For Margaret Hamilton, now 72 years old, "There's a tremendous opportunity for identification. "All of us have been through woods, all of us have had lions and tigers in our life.We've had dangers, difficulties."

"It's the fantasy, the wonderment," says Haley. "The children like to be scared and it all turns out happily."

The roles are not easily forgotten. Margaret Hamilton did the witch routine on demand recently at Emerson College and Bolger reports he keeps running into people who remember the film as a child. Extending a limp . arm,Bolger says, "I shake hands with them —like a scarecrow".

NEW YORK — Five gold-uniformed private soldiers led by a Captain Eagle dropped onto a pier by the East River from a helicopter hovering overhead one day last month. They planted a flag, checked their weapons and began moving inland.

Monday, Mar. 1, 1982

The man who financed the invading troops, Martin D. Abrams, announced: "Military themes are back in America. The need for the military has regained the respectability it lost during the late '60s and 70s."

That is the kind of thing they do to get publicity at the annual Toy Show. Abrams is the chairman of Mego Corp., which was introducing an army-sized line of military toys called "Eagle Force."

"Makers Bent on Military" was the lead headline of Toy Trade News for Feb. 27. "Makers Back Military, Buyers Are Divided," reported the February issue of Toys, Hobbies & Crafts.

"The indications are good," said Craig Collier of Consolidated Toy of St. Louis. "During the Vietnam War people were turned off, but now they are getting over it. There's another generation of kids out there."

"Military is in resurgence because of a change in the political attitude of the country," said Mark Nuccio of H-G Toys Inc. of Long Beach, N.Y. "The government is putting more money into defense. It has a higher profile with certain tactical groups being promoted, such as ah* the maneuvers that occurred in the Middle East last year."

The military boom at this year Toy Show — aimed at that new generation of kids out there — is a facinating case study of the synergistic relationship between commerce and government in theUnited States. The toymakers are not responding to a greatly increased public demand for war toys — that's what the line "Buyers Are Divided" meant in the Toys, Hobby and Craft headline.

The manufacturers are betting that the Reagan administration'smilitaristic bent will create the market. The toymakers also see themselves as performing a national service. "We set out to develop a toy line which would capitalize upon and reinforce the renewed sense of national pride, strengnth, courage and determination sweeping America," said Abrams of Mego.

"Our military toy, then, is, we hope, going to reinforce an accepted American concept: Terrorism is wrong and should be stamped out."

Eagle Force wil be sold, like some Reagan military programs, as an anti-terrorist force. "Captain Eagle," "Goldie Hawk," "Zapper" and other die-cast metal Force members are trying to stamp out villains like "Shock Trooper" and "General Mamba."".

An old favorite, "G.I. Joe" — the soldier doll — is being reintroduced after years of retirement. Joe is also after terrorists now, villainous dolls hi the paramilitary uniforms of something called COBRA.

The television commercials will soon begin. The rhetoric will bemodeled after the talk coming out of Washington these days. "Research has shown there is a potential consumer resistance for military toys due to the connotations of war that they hold," said a Mego official, Alan Chernoff. (Editor's note: Alan Chernoff would appear on Donahue to defend the Eagle Force line) "The Eagle Force figures we are introducing are positioned not as a war toy, but as protectors of freedom and justice."

There were also a number of booklets at the show. One called "Toys Are Teaching Tools," published by the Toy Manufacturers of America, Inc., said: "Today's toys are tomorrow's adult tools, scaled-down versions of real-life objects. With them children can create imaginary lifelike situations. Toys help children to assume adult roles and to experiment with the objects, machines and technology of adult society . . .Children gain a sense of values from their toys."

So, that's what our children will be taught this year.

"This isn't the toy business.It's show business." That approach brought Martin Abrams, 33, the flashy young entrepreneur of Mego International, a real-life fortune in make-believe. Abrarns' dolls are made in the image and likeness of television and motion picture deities such as Sonny and Cher, Muhammed Ali, the Waltons, the characters from Star Trek and the Wizard of Oz, as well as old established comic strip heroes like Superman.

Their appeal has catapaulted Mego from about 300th to sixth in return on sales in the highly competitive toy business nationwide since Abrams took over in 1971. Mego's newest offering is a 10-inch image of the current hip sensation, Henry (The Fonz) Winkler of television's "Happy Days." Abrams was still in his twenties when be took over the family business and bet on his instincts, sensing that there was a vast pre-developed market among children and youth for the stars and "cult" figures of the moment

He piled one on top of the other, signing dozens of personalities for up to 5 per cent of safes, and getting the doll rights to whole shows. "We grab the top stars and pay big." said the jaunty young New Yorker.

No matter if a few should become obsolete in a hurry, like his "Planet of the Apes" line did when the TV show folded. He just took the bodies and put new heads on them.

His promotions include huge parties for buyers featuringthe personalities themselves. One was a 150,000 bash in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria where 1,000 guests met all the surviving stars of the 'Wizard of Oz." including Scarecrow Ray Bolger and Tin Man Jack Haley.

Mego's dolls have flexible arms and can sit, stand or be placed in attitudes of leaping tall buildings in a single bound. They're all American and all made in Hong Kong and Taiwan, but distributed jnternationally from a center on Long Island. Abrams' father, Marty, (Editor's note: the author meant to write David) founder of the business in 1952, runs the production end of it in Hong Kong. His father,mother and brother are all in the business, but Martin is calling the shots.

That's because he's tripled sales in the past three years alone, to an estimated 180 million for the fiscal year just ending, and has multiplied earnings five times, to about $4 million. For all the flash and razzledazzle, Abrams says Mego hasn't overexpanded and is into stay. He says he's found a way to beat one of the main drawbacks of the business-copycatting— by signing up thestars long in advance and locking everyone else out"We're already negotiating for our 1977 line," he says.

Everybody loves a new Mego discovery especially when it's the original 8" action figure himself, Action Jackson. Newly discovered is this rare and never before seen Mego Action Jackson Wardrobe locker. This looks to have been produced by Mego itself but isn't featured in any catalogs to our knowledge. If somebody had this as a kid and could shine some light on it, drop us a line!

Aj stands next to it for a size comparision, as you can see it's much smaller than the typical carry case

The interior reveals what looks like a hanger, obviously this wardrobe locker is missing pieces. Hopefully a complete example will someday surface.

The Lost Mego Star Trek Playset

Todays Update: The Star Trek Enterprise Playset.

Saving the best for the very last, we at the Megomuseum are proud to unveil this never before seen Mego playset, the Star Trek Bridge 2.0! Not only do we have a little history behind it, for 1977 the Mego R&D crew were attempting to create more detailed playsets for Star Trek, when costing came back too high on this beauty, Vinny Baiera mentioned that they then began doing the Star Trek series in the Comic Action Heroes scale.

Hopefully, someday, some images of those surface but for now, let's take a more detailed look at this beauty.

It seems Mr Spock has fallen ill and is brought up to the Sick Bay wing via the elevator, this all seems well and good but wait, why does Scotty have a red phaser?

Wait, if that's Scotty on the newer, more accurate helm of the Enterprise, who is in the Sickbay? is it a Klingon spy? Didn't Mego R&D have a McCoy hanging around? I guess we'll never know.

Todays Update: The Prototype Mego Wayne Foundation.

We end our first week of the lost archive with a pretty big bang, this is an early prototype of the Mego Wayne Foundation (you can see the one lucky kids got in 1977 here) and as you can see it greatly differed from the one we collectors know well. Everything from the layout, to the construction to the artwork is different and hey, this one had plants!

The Lost Archive Opens

Now that San Diego Comic Con has filled us with the sights of Mego like items to come, it's time to take a look back to the company that made it all happen in the first place with this new series of discoveries.

First, let's give credit where it's due, the next three weeks are all courtesy of former Mego designer Vincent Baiera. Over the past few years Mr. Baiera has been wealth of information and a good friend to the Mego collecting Community.

He contacted us recently saying he'd uncovered some documents and was more than happy to share them with the Megomuseum.

You can read our interview with Mr. Baiera here.

What we received was a series of photographs, including early test shots of produced items, prototypes of rumoured offerings and never before heard of toys and playsets from the golden age of the World's Greatest Toy Company.

To begin, we unveil the new Lost Archive Gallery at the MegoMuseum, which will be updated every day for the next 3 weeks or so, each we promise to bring you something you've never seen before.

Heroes In Action gave the Museum a scoop at San Diego Comic Con, their latest mad creation Lincolnstein!

Sculpted by Sean Sansom, the undead and regular versions of Honest Abe will be later in the year and hopefully this isn't the last of the creative variants.

The Phantom Limb Materializes

Bif Bang Pow! is unveiling their Venture Brothers Series Two prototypes this week at San Diego Comic Con and now we've got shots of Hamilton G. Fantamos AKA Guild Supervillain The Phantom Limb.

This character presented a unique challenge to Bif Bang Pow mostly because his limbs are invisible, while releasing a figure with no limbs would be accurate, I imagine most are happier with this solution.

As always this is a prototype and not the final version but it sure is spiffy.

Bif Bang Pow Reveals Dr. Girlfriend

Cast-a-Way Toys at SDCC

figures) at the Shocker Toys booth (#3849) starting tonight (Thursday). On
display will be our newly updated Captain Action and Dr. Eville figures.
Each featuring new paint apps, updated accessories and new card art by
renowned comic artist Art Thibert. Also on display will be new figures...
Captain Action as the Phantom and Dr. Eville as Redbeard. If you're at the
show, stop by the Shocker Toys booth and introduce yourself to Ed Catto and

This rare photo of the 1980 Mego showroom claims the model is wearing "Star Trek regalia" (not sure what uniform that is) but more importantly it gives a glimpse of what Mego had to offer at Toy Fair 1980.

This photo not only shows Black Hole toys that were never released to market but also gives us a first look of what the box for remote controlled V.I.N.C.ent would have looked like.

We've shown it before but it's worth repeating, this six foot banner was prominently displayed in the Mego booth at 1980 Toy Fair.

Spectre Toys to Haunt Dark Shadows Festival & 2010 San Diego Comic-Con

Los Angeles, CA – July 10, 2010 - Spectre Toys is proud to announce their participation in two upcoming consumer shows: the 2010 Dark Shadows Festival and the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con. Spectre will be attending both shows and has announced details concerning their fan favorite “Dark Shadows” line of figures.

The Dark Shadows Festival (July 16, 17, &18th at the Burbank Marriott Hotel, Burbank, CA.) will be the first stop for Spectre Toys convention tour this year. There will be a very limited supply of pre release Barnabas & Angelique figures available for sale, as well as several prototypes of upcoming “Dark Shadows” figures.
